12.11.06   15.36

Some of our members were in uniform at the Remembrance Day Service in Nefyn Church when the pagers went off because of  a report of a jet ski in difficulties to the East of Nefyn Bay.   It turned out that the jet ski was towing a rubber ring when the rope was sucked into the engine inlet causing the engine to fail so it and the three persons with it were drifting towards Penrhyn Bodeilias.    As the water was just shallow enough in one place for one of the occupants to stand on the bottom they managed to pull the jet ski ashore before going as far as y Wern.   A 4WD vehicle with the jet ski's trailer managed, after quite a struggle, to recover the jet ski and after becoming stuck several times towed it back to Nefyn.  All persons were safe and well although a little cold.

Our pagers called us out after a call was received at Holyhead Control Room that a dog was stuck on the cliffs near Abergeirch.    Although the dog was not immediately located, a search of the area revealed that it was on rocks between Abergeirch and Porth Ty Mawr, Edern.   The dog, a black and white sheepdog, could be seen below us just above sea level so we contacted Porthdillaen Lifeboat to see if they could assist us in recovering it.   However, before the lifeboat had launched Emlyn, one of our member, managed to coax the dog along the rocks to him at an easier location. We set up safety ropes to ensure that neither Emlyn nor the dog fell into the sea as Emlyn carried the dog to safely.
On examining the dog, which seemed unhurt, we saw that her name was 'Cadi', with a Tudweiliog telephe number on the identity disc.   We rang the number and it was confirmed that Cadi did indeed live in Tudweiliog and the owner had gone out to search for her after she ran away the previous evening on being frightened by the sound of fireworks.   She must have been very frightened to run away so far and to such a remote place.   She was also extremely lucky that someone had spotted her.   Incidentally, just after we had recovered Cadi, we were approached by another person who was looking along the cliffs for their dog that had run away for the same reason, and guess what that dog was called  ..........    It was also called 'Cadi'!

Galwyd ni allan ar ôl  i Ganolfan Caergybi dderbyn galwad yn dweud fod ci ar y creigiau yn Abergeirch ac yn methu dod oddi yno.   Wedi cyrraedd y fan gwelwyd fod ci defaid du a gwyn ar greigiau rhwng Abergeirch a Phorth Ty Mawr, Edern.   Am ei fod yn agos i lefel y môr gofynwyd i griw bad achub Porthdinllaen os y gallent hwy gymorthwyo, ond cyn iddynt lansio llwyddodd Emlyn, un o'n hogiau ni, ddenu'r ci bach ar hyd y creigiau i fan y gallai gael gafael ynddo.   Trefnwyd rhaffau i sicrhau diogelwch Emlyn a'r ci a gallodd gario'r ci i fyny i ddiogelwch pen yr allt.    
Gwelsom fod enw a rhif ffôn ar ei choler - 'Cadi' oedd ei henw gyda rhif ffôn yn Nhudweiliog.   Ffoniwyd y rhif a cafwyd cadarhad mai yn Nhudweiliog yr oedd yn byw.   Yn wir, 'roedd ei pherchenog allan yn chwilio amdani ar ôl iddi ddychryn a rhedeg i ffwrdd y noson gynt pan glywodd swn tân gwyllt.  Rhaid ei bod wedi dychryn yn fawr i redeg mor bell i ffwrdd ac i le mor ddyrys, a bu'n ffodus iawn fod rhywun wedi ei gweld yno.
Gyda llaw, ar ôl achub Cadi daeth pobl eraill atom ar ben yr allt gan chwilio am eu ci hwy a redodd i ffwrdd dan yr un amgylchiadau.  Ac enw eu ci hwy?....  'Cadi' arall!

A caller reported that in the darkness he may have seen a torch being flashed from seaward possibly from a boat which would have been in the direction of Porth Ysgaden when viewed from Trwyn Porthdinllaen.   We were called out as was Porthdinllaen Lifeboat.   We checked various locations between Porthdinllaen and Porth Ysgaden but saw no trace of a craft.   As neither the lifeboat nor ourselves had found any sign of a craft in the area on radar or visually the search was eventually called off.

Small craft off Nefyn Point reported to be in difficulties.   We located the craft in the position given and Porthdinllaen Lifeboat was launched.   When approached, the two persons on board said that they did not require assistance as they were fishing and were not in any sort of difficulty.   Still, better safe than sorry!

A kayak was reported to be in difficulties off Porthdinllaen point so Porthdinllaen RNLI lifeboat crew and ourselves were alerted.  The boarding boat was launched from the lifeboat station and we made our way to the headland in our vehicle.   We located what turned out to be a speedboat with four persons on board, not a kayak as had been reported,  about half a mile offshore needing assistance.   They did not have a marine band radio on board.   The boat was taken in tow by the lifeboat boarding boat and towed to the safety of the lifeboat slipway.

It was reported that what may have been flares had been seen to the west of Porthdinllaen point.   Team members were called out to investigate but despite searching for some time with night vision glasses, spotlights, etc.,  nothing was seen or heard to confirm the report and no further action was taken.

We were called out following a report of a yacht with a fouled propellor drifting off Porthdinllaen Bay causing a danger to other vessels.   The yacht was located, Porthdinllaen Lifeboat was called out and went to her assistance, making her secure.

The team were called out following a telephone call from the same person as yesterday stating that they could again see the same object out at sea.   As previously nothing could be seen by us after speaking to the informant and searching through binoculars.

10.8.06     1503

Holyhead MRCC (Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre) received a call from a member of  the public that earlier, at 1130am, they had seen a red object out to sea about 3-4 miles out from Carreg y Llam which through binoculars resembled a plane with smoke rising from it.   Team members scoured the sea from various viewpoints in the area but could not see the object described and because of the time delay and there being  no reports of aircraft missing no further action was taken.

Two team members were sent to Porthdinllaen beach following a report that a deep hole had been dug there.   On arrival they found a hole measuring 7 ft. deep and 4 ft. across in the sand about 2 metres from the cliff bottom.   This in itself presented a danger to children playing on the beach either by falling into it or being buried in it if the walls collapsed and in view of landslides in the area, including the fatal one at Nefyn, it could not be left as it was.   It was therefore filled in by the team members with the assistance of people on the beach.

5.8.06   1800

Holyhead Coastguard received a call from North Wales Ambulance Service control room requesting assistance with an injured person aboard an inflatable boat at Morfa Nefyn Beach.  On arrival it was found that a 17yr.old local girl had received leg injuries in a collision with another boat.   Paramedics treated the casualty on the boat and it was decided to remove her to hospital by helicopter.   A Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley was requested and it landed on Morfa Nefyn beach where the casualty was transferred from the boat and taken to Ysbytty Gwynedd at Bangor.
In this sort of incident our tasks include -

  • making sure there is no more danger to anyone;
  • giving first aid unless ambulance personnel are already present in which case we assist them if required;
  • sorting out a landing place for the helicopter and fire smoke flares to indicate wind direction and speed ;
  • ensuring the safety of the general public through controlling the landing/lifting area;
  • keeping our control room informed of the situation in case further action is necessary.   Back to top.

2.8.06   1445

Called out following information from Porthdinllaen lifeboat boathouse that a small speedboat/dinghy,  with four persons on board waving their arms, appeared to be in trouble close to the burgeon off Porthdinllaen Point.   The lifeboat boarding boat  was launched and the speedboat was towed back to Morfa Nefyn beach where we spoke to the speedboat's crew.   Their main engine had stalled and could not be restarted and the spare engine would not start either,  probably because the fuel tap had not been switched on.   All on board were safe and well.  
Shortly afterwards we were sent to Porthdinllaen Point where youngsters had been seen jumping off high rocks into the sea in a way that they might injure themselves.   The children, who were locals,  were found and advised of the danger.

We were called, together with Porthdinllaen lifeboat, to Nefyn beach following a report of a jet skier in trouble.  When we arrived we found the jet skier, an adult man, safely ashore on the beach.   He had fallen off the jetski  but the wind had blown the craft further away and he could not reach it so he swam ashore while another boat went after the jetski and towed it back ashore.

Porthdinllaen lifeboat and coastguard team were called out following a radio call from a 'rib' belonging to a diving club that had gone out from Porth Ysgaden.   Four divers had been dropped off by the boat and were undertaking a drift dive with the boat following their surface marker buoys when the boat's engine stalled.   When the engine refused to restart the divers were in danger of unknowingly becoming totally separated from the boat so the crew called Hollyhead Coastguard for assistance.   Porthdinllaen lifeboat arrived on scene just as the dive boat's occupants managed to restart they engine.   The dive boat picked up the divers and was able to return safely to Porth Ysgaden escorted by the lifeboat.
When we spoke to the boat's crew ashore we were informed that the carburettor had probably flooded following the choke being used to try to restart the engine initially.

Galwyd bad achub Porthdinllaen a ninnau allan yn dilyn galwad radio i Wylwyr y Glannau yng Nghaergybi oddiar gwch deifio oedd wedi mynd allan o Borth Ysgaden.   Gollyngwyd pedwar deifar i'r môr ô'r cwch gyda'r bwriad o'u dilyn gyda'r cwch ond ar ôl cyfnod peidiodd peiriant y cwch ac ni ellid ei ail-danio.   Yr oedd perygl i'r deifwyr fynd allan o olwg y criw ar y cwch a galwyd am gymorth.    Cyrhaeddodd y bad achub ar yr adeg y gallodd criw'r cwch deifio ail-danio'r peiriant a codwyd y deifwyr yn ddiogel cyn dychwelyd i Borth Ysgaden gyda'r bad achub yn cadw llygad arnynt.
Ymddengys fod y criw wedi gorlifo'r carburadur wrth ei dagu pan yn ceisio ail-danio'r peiriant.

A '999' call was received from the relative of an 11 year old boy who was on holiday in the area.   The family were on the coastal path near Porth Ychain in Penllech, Tudweiliog when they saw the boy climbing down the cliff towards the sea.   They lost sight of him and moved to find a better vantage point but failed to see him and had no response when they shouted out his name.   They became worried for his safety and called at a nearby house from whence they phoned for assistance.
Porthdinllaen lifeboat, a helicopter from Valley and our team were called out.   Fortunately, when our mobile arrived on the scene, the boy was found to be safe and well having just been reunited with his mother.   He had climbed back up the cliffs but could not find his family and had sensibly gone straight back to the cottage in Towyn where they were staying on holiday.

Galwyd am wasanaeth bad achub Porthdinllaen a hofrennydd o'r Fali yn ogystal a'n tîm ninnau.   Yn ffodus pan gyrrhaeddodd y tîm gallwyd canslo'r bad achub a'r hofrennydd pan welwyd fod y bachgen yn ddiogel gyda'i fam.   'Roedd o wedi dringo yn ôl i fyny'r creigiau ond erbyn hynny ni allai weld ei deulu ac yn ddigon doeth aeth yn syth yn ôl i'r bwthyn yn Towyn lle 'roedd y teulu'n aros dros eu gwyliau.

Team members were called out to investigate a report that a yacht was dragging its anchor in Porthdinllaen Bay.   The call was cancelled when it was learned that the owner was on board and was dealing with the problem.

Called out following a complaint about the manner in which a jetski was being driven off Nefyn beach.   The driver was spoken to at the scene and advised about the safe use of the craft.

A mobile phone call was received at Holyhead Coastguard from a 17 foot speedboat that had broken down off Tywyn beach, Tudweiliog with 3 persons on board.   The team was paged as was Porthdinllaen Lifeboat and the craft was towed to Porth Ysgaden from where it had been launched.   It did not have a spare engine, flares, marine band radio or life jackets.

2.7.06    1840

Following a report of a craft with engine trouble to the west of Trefor the team and Porthdinllaen lifeboat were paged and found the vessel off Morfa Trefor.  The craft was a 16 ft. RIB (Rigid inflatable boat) which had hit a lobster pot marker.   The engine had been raised  to check for damage but would not lower back down because of hydraulic problems.   It did not have a spare engine and was safely towed back to Trefor Pier.

Two team members were sent to investigate a report that there was an unusual object on Morfa Nefyn Beach at Cerrig Gleision.   The object turned out to be a mass of tangled rope and net and was hauled to above the high water mark.

Gyrrwyd dau o'r tîm i ymchwilio i adroddiad fod rhyw wrthrych rhyfedd ger Cerrig Gleision ar draeth Morfa Nefyn.   Darganfuwyd mai tocyn blêr o raffau a rhwydi cymysg oedd yno ac fe'i tynnwyd i fyny o afael y llanw.     Yn ôl i'r brig.

Holyhead Coastguard received a call reporting that what was possibly a red flare had been sighted from Porthdinllaen somewhere between Nefyn and Porth y Nant (Nant Gwrtheyrn).   Porthdinllaen Lifeboat was still afloat having just completed the rescue of a yacht and crew from some miles out to sea so they were tasked to investigate the red flare.  We were also called out to check the coastline in that area bearing in mind the earlier call about the van and trailer in Trefor beach car park.   Nothing was found by the lifeboat visually or on radar and we were also unsuccessful.  
(P.S.  Two of our members were in Trefor on patrol later that day when they saw the occupants of the "missing" boat returning ashore.   They had camped overnight on the beach at Morfa Nefyn unaware of any concern about them!)

17.6.06   2252

A call was received reporting that a van and boat trailer were still in the beach car park at Trefor, having been left there since early morning. Concern was expressed about the safety of the boat and crew so team members were called out and made unsuccessful enquiries locally to try and establish their whereabouts.   Details of the vehicle were passed to North Wales Police who traced the vehicle's owner and after contacting his family it transpired that the boat's crew were night fishing and that there was no worry about their safety.

A '999' call that was difficult to understand was received at Operations Room, Holyhead from a caller possibly in the Porth Colmon area.   While some team members checked Porth Colmon the rescue vehicle which was en route was informed by Holyhead that further information had revealed that the caller was at Uwchmynydd (near Aberdaron) and was concerned about a boat in Swnt Enlli (Bardsey Sound).   On arrival at the old coastguard lookout at Uwchmynydd one boat could be seen in the sound but it did not appear to be in difficulty.   Attempts were made to contact the boat on VHF marine band channel 16 (distress frequency) but there was no response.   We were satisfied that all was in order.     Back to top.

Derbyniwyd galwad '999' annodd ei deall yng Nghaergybi gan berson o bosibl yn ardal Porth Colmon.   Tra 'roedd rhai aelodau o'r tîm ym Mhorth Colmon cafwyd galwad i'r cerbyd achub oedd ar y ffordd yno fod gwybodaeth pellach wedi dod i law mai o Uwchmynydd yr oedd yr alwad wreiddiol wedi cael ei gwneud a bod y person a'i gwnaeth yn boenus am gwch a welsai  yn Swnt Enlli.   Aethom i ben Mynydd Mawr a gweld fod un cwch yn y Swnt ond ni ymddangosai ei fod mewn trafferthion.  Galwyd hi ar sianel 16 (sianel argyfwng) ar y radio forol ond ni chafwyd ymateb.    'Roeddem yn sicr fod pob dim yn iawn.   Yn ôl i'r brig.


28.5.06   1345

The rescue vehicle and crew were at the Porthdinllaen lifeboat station for the lifeboat open day when they were informed that  a woman had fallen and sustained an injury to her leg on rocky ground on the Porthdinllaen headland.   An ambulance was also on the way.   On arrival it was found that the 50 yr. old woman had suffered a broken ankle.   The ambulance could not be taken close to the casualty because of the terrain and a helicopter from RAF Valley was requested.   The woman was winched into the helicopter and taken to Ysbytty Gwynedd.   Back to top.

'Roedd y cerbyd achub a'i griw yng ngorsaf y bad achub ym Mhorthdinllaen ar gyfer diwrnod agored y bad achub pan gawsant wybod fod dynes wedi disgyn ac wedi brifo ei choes ar dir creigiog ar Drwyn Porthdinllaen.  'Roedd ambiwlans hefyd ar y ffordd.   Gwelwyd fod y ddynes 50 mlwydd oed wedi torri asgwrn ei ffêr.  Oherwydd natur y tir ni ellid mynd a'r ambiwlans yn agos ati felly gofynnwyd am hofrennydd o'r Fali.   Winsiwyd y ddynes i fyny i'r hofrennydd ac aed a hi i Ysbytty Gwynedd.   Yn ôl i'r brig.

Ambulance control requested assistance at Morfa Nefyn beach near Hen Blas following a report of a man with a broken leg.   Coastguard rescue vehicle with team members and sector manager attended.   After liaising with ambulance personnel at scene it was decided it would better to remove the casualty, a 75 year old man with possible broken ankle,  by helicopter.   A Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley was requested and airlifted the casualty to Ysbytty Gwynedd in Bangor.     Back to top.

Report of craft with engine failure off Porthdinllaen beach.   Porthdinllaen lifeboat also paged and because of shallow water it was decided to use the ‘boarding boat’ rather than the offshore lifeboat.   (The boarding boat is an inflatable boat with an outboard engine that the lifeboat crew use to go to the lifeboat if it is on a mooring rather than in the boathouse.)   The craft in difficulties was a 16 ft. sailing dinghy with two adults on board which was soon towed safely back to the beach.     Back to top.

Fishing vessel having engine trouble near Carreg y Llam.  Team members kept an eye on the vessel from Pistyll while vessel’s crew managed to restart their engine and managed to safely reach mooring at Porthdinllaen.      Back to top.

Observations kept on the converted trawler from the previous incident (22.4.06), which was now making its own way to Pwllheli, as far as Mynydd Mawr, Aberdaron, where Aberdaron Coastguard Rescue Team would take over.     Back to top.

Radio call to Holyhead Coastguard from a converted trawler broken down and taking in water on passage from Caernarfon to Pwllheli but in the dark were unsure of their present position.   Helicopter, Porthdinllaen lifeboat and Coastguard team called out to begin a seach.   In the mobile, we located the craft off Porth Ysgaden and kept observation until Sea King helicopter and lifeboat arrived.   The lifeboat managed to put a pump on board the craft.    The vessel and a cabin cruiser that was being towed by it were both towed back to Porthdinllaen by the lifeboat whilst we kept all under observation until safely moored.     Back to top.

Team called out following a report that 2 fishermen were trapped on rocks at Trefor.   They were unable to climb back up cliffs in the dark because the steep rocks were wet and slippery.   With assistance from Llandwrog Coastguard team cliff rescue equipment was set up and Alun went down to the fishermen who were safely brought up one at a time.   Both were cold but uninjured.     Back to top.

29.1.06  1520

Called to Nant Gwrtheyrn to assist ambulance personnel going to person fallen in quarry.   Assistance given and SAR helicopter called due to distance from road, difficult terrain and severe injuries sustained.  Casualty had fallen off high wall of old quarry buildings near beach,  ambulance could only go as far as café.   Casualty was winched on board an RAF search and rescue helicopter from Valley and taken to Ysbytty Gwynedd.     Yn ôl i'r brig.
